Info On Cyprus

WELCOME TO CYPRUS

Cyprus is the most eastern island of the Mediterranean Sea, approximately 105 kilometres west of Syria, 75 kilometres south of Turkey, 380 kilometres north of Egypt and 380 kilometres east of the island of Rhodes.

Rich in copper and strategically positioned, Cyprus has been the sought after island by crusaders. Civilizations came and went leaving their architectural and social influence. In fact Cyprus (Kypros in Greek) gave copper its latin name: cuprum.

It is the island of love and beauty. It is the birthplace of Aphrodite, the Olympus goddess of love and beauty, borne out of the waves near Petra Tou Romiou in the county of Paphos. Throughout Cyprus temples were built and named after her. The natural spring at the Akamas area, is known as The Baths of Aphrodite or Fontana Amorosa.

Excavations have brought to light the Houses of Dionysus, Orpheus and Aion with their famous mosaics, buried for sixteen centuries and yet preserved in a very good condition.

Paphos is included in the official UNESCO list of cultural and natural treasures of world heritage.

Today, Cyprus is a modern country with a high standard of living, European culture and ancient enchantment.

Cyprus is 9,251 square kilometres and is dotted with citrus and olive groves, vineyards, cypress and pine forests on the mountains and some of the cleanest beaches in the Mediterranean.

The tourist industry is very advanced with 4 and 5 star hotels offering many facilities to visitors such as:

  • Restaurants
  • Gyms
  • Tennis Courts
  • Kids Clubs
  • Beautiful Outdoor Pools and Clean Sandy Beaches

Sports

As well as all the water sports that are available throughout Cyprus, swimming, water skiing, scuba diving, sailing, fishing, windsurfing and others, there are well designed water-parks with exciting water rides to be enjoyed by all.

Golf is now an increasingly popular sport with golf courses at Tsada, Secret Valley and Aphrodite Hills in Paphos district.

Other sports are also available inland such us hiking, mountain biking, horse riding, pigeon shooting and hunting.

Fairs

During the year many fairs take place on the island. The Carnival festival in February and the Wine Festival in September take place in Limassol. At the wine festival visitors are offered free Cypriot wine and food free or at very little cost. There are parades of kantadori (singers with their quitars), dancing by people wearing costumes and competitions for the best costume. The celebrations culminate in the parade of floats on the last Sunday of the festival.

Flower festivals with colourful floral parades are held in every town during May and in June, 50 days after Easter Larnaca bursts into activity as it celebrates the festival of Kataklismos. Many festivities are organised along the shore promenade including traditional singing competitions.
